CHAPTER 14

Do the Things That Create Confidence and Avoid the Things That Chip Away at It

“You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.”

—IRISH PROVERB

One day, during a business trip, I jumped in an Uber and checked my messages. One of the messages was from a woman I knew from social media, Michelle, and she wanted to know if I would consider speaking at an event she was holding close to my home in Miami in another couple of weeks. The event looked small, but I have learned that, when I show up for things, opportunities can happen. So I really try to make the effort to show up whenever I can.

Author note: In the event that this left you scratching your head as I have been preaching about raising your fees and valuing yourself and your time, I need to remind you that this book was not written in chronological order. The book is in three parts—beliefs, actions, knowledge—and there are moments like this one where the story you are reading now actually happened before I had raised my fees and started saying no to unpaid events. Here’s the thing: sometimes you’ve got to do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do. There is no doubt that I wanted to get paid for all of my events when I first started, but the reality was I needed footage of me speaking, needed testimonials of my work, and I wanted to refine and test my message. So, when I started out, I worked for free even though it wasn’t the end goal. Speaking for free is what got me started and allowed me to see my potential. Making the transition wasn’t seamless or easy and there were moments where those lines were blurred. As my business grew and I had a roster of paying clients, I began to see it as unfair for me to speak for free for others when I had great clients that saw my value and paid me for it. I began to realize if I wanted to be taken seriously, I would create an option for unpaid events: I created a pre-recorded video that I would send to anyone that had an unpaid event in lieu of me speaking. This protected my paying clients and provided value for those in need. Now, back to the story . . .

I have also learned that if I can help out another person, and I am not already committed to doing something else, then that simple act always pays dividends even if you don’t see it at first.

I fired back a yes and explained I would waive my speaking fee for her. But I would need her to create social media support for me so I could receive some value for my services. This is another thing I have learned since going out on my own.
